DETAILS: TEACH, Tony’s Restaurant, and Constable Alan Rosen Team Up to Provide More Than 1,000 Family Dinners to Houston Children and Families
HOUSTON (May 6, 2020) – Cars started lining up at noon on May 6 as TEACH – To Educate all Children, Tony’s Restaurant, and Constable Alan Rosen partnered in an initiative to provide more than 1,000 family-style meals to students in need from TEACH-partnered Houston Independent schools.
Starting Wednesday, May 6, 225 family-style meals were made and distributed by TEACH and Tony’s staff at the Richmond Street restaurant, which is owned by the Vallone family, longtime Houston hospitality-industry leaders. Students and their families from Houston Independent School District schools where TEACH serves were invited to apply to pick up a packaged meal via curbside service from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm each day. Distribution of the family meals continued on May 8, 9 and 12.
“The important fact to remember is more than 90 percent of children attending HISD schools qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Just in the schools TEACH serves, that is more than 10,000 students,” said Susan Sarofim, Houston philanthropist and co-founder of TEACH, an independent nonprofit that creates safe, calm classroom environments. “Simply put, without school, many children are going without food. Therefore, TEACH and Tony’s joined in creating this community-based project with HISD to provide nutritious meals to as many of these children as we can. Contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated.”
The program was supported by Constable Alan Rosen and the Harris County Precinct One Constable’s Office. They provided safety, security, and traffic control services during meal pickups. “This is an important initiative during these challenging times, and I am proud to be a part of this effort to ensure families have enough to eat,” said Constable Rosen.
Each meal pack was designed to feed a family of four and included a roast chicken, mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and dessert. In total, more than 1,000 dinner packages were distributed, feeding 4,000 meals to children and families in need. A donation of $40 covered costs to feed a family of four. If you missed the meal distribution but would like to support TEACH’s work in Houston schools, you may donate online or by emailing Mallory Chesser.
Precinct One distributed masks and gloves at the event. As the Precinct One staff assisted with moving the cars, Erica Davis, the Director of Community Outreach, gathered names and distributed masks and gloves at the event. Along with Tony Vallone and his staff, helping place meals in the back of each vehicle were Susan Sarofim, Constable Alan Rosen, Assistant Chief Deputy Carl Shaw, TEACH Board Chair David Sprague, TEACH staff, and Nory Angel.
