Meet Mallory Chesser

TEACH’s Events & Communications Manager

School was always fun for Mallory – so fun that she found herself channeling her favorite teachers and giving her younger brothers reading assignments and quizzes during summer break. A self-proclaimed “nerd,” Mallory has always been most engaged when she’s reading, writing or diving into new topics. While her brothers might’ve resented her commitment to learning, that dedication paved the way for Mallory’s work in higher education, where she has spent a decade of her career, including as a composition instructor at Texas State University, from which she earned her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing. Her experiences in the classroom cultivated Mallory’s belief that every child deserves great teachers and successful, fulfilling academic experiences.

Mallory has been able to put her passion for education to work at TEACH. In her role as Events & Communications Manager, she has the opportunity to be the organization’s storyteller, sharing its work and impact with the educators, stakeholders and community it serves. She also supports fundraising efforts, including TEACH’s signature event experiences, Tee Up Fore TEACH and Touchdown for TEACH. When Mallory tours a school campus or sets foot in a classroom, she still feels energized by the fun, creative energy that sparked her love for education all those years ago.

TEACH: Who do you consider one of the great teachers in your life and why?
MC: I had a lot of good teachers, so it feels a bit unfair to pick just one – but I would say my first grade teacher, Ms. Draper, who set me on a course to believe that school was a fun, happy place. She made an impression on me from the start and set the tone for what school was supposed to be about. She used a plastic toy hammer to “bop” us on the head when we answered her questions correctly. Everyone wanted to get bopped. She made learning fun and memorable.

TEACH: What are you most looking forward to at TEACH this year?
MC: For the past year, our program team has been working with educators remotely. This fall they finally get to go back into physical classrooms. I know they and I are excited about that. The team is also launching new curriculum modules designed in-house with Houston schools in mind, tailored to address the specific issues they’re facing. I can’t wait to see the difference it makes.

TEACH: Is there anything else you’d like someone new to TEACH to know?
MC: TEACH is about more than training or teaching teachers. Our program managers work with teachers as colleagues, respecting their skills as educators and offering one-to-one coaching support throughout the year. That helps ensure teachers get the professional development they need and are seeing a direct impact in their classrooms over time.
